Challenge Question

“How can we improve the overall student experience taking the CATA (MSU Bus system)?”

At MSU, a school with one of the largest campuses in America, a problem that many

students face is access to transportation. Our goal was to provide a solution that was

something new, unique to Michigan State, and could run at night/during weekends (when

bus system usually isn’t running).

The current bus system is inconsistent, and often not very efficient.

Design Thinking

My Process

As a team of designers, my group worked to follow a strict design process that wanted to produce the most efficient, effective, user friendly solutions.

We began by creating a challenge question, identifying the roots of the current troubles students were facing with the CATA bus system.

Moving forward, we created a variety of questions for user interviews, attempting to fine-tune these roots/issues that we needed to solve.

Interviews

Process

We discovered lots of information by interviewing students. This was important, but also we needed to narrow down the information we obtained so that we could develop a few effective solutions. Our final 3 primary issues were:

  1. Bus is regularly not on time -> apps are not 100% reliable for scheduling
  2. Overcrowding is common
  3. Users didn’t know about Transit App (CATA Bus App) or lacked knowledge on how to use it
